Gaura, a species of ox (Bos gaurus), is frequently mentioned
with the Gavaya from the Rigveda^1 onwards.^2 As the Vāja-
saneyi Saṃhitā^3 expressly mentions wild (āraṇya) Gauras, they
must usually have been tame. The female, Gaurī, is also often
referred to.^4 The compound term Gaura-mṛga (‘the Gaura
wild beast’) is sometimes met with.^5
