Englishअश्मक १ / AŚMAKA I. Son born to vasiṣṭha by the wife of kalmāṣapāda the King of ayodhyā. (See ikṣvāku vaṁśa) while the King kalmāṣapāda was walking through the forest hunting he saw śakti the son of vasiṣṭha. As śakti did not care to give room for the King, kalmāṣapāda wounded śakti, who cursed the King and changed him to a rākṣasa (giant). The giant immediately killed śakti. After many years vasiṣṭha blessed the King and changed the form of the giant and gave him back his former shape. The King was delighted at having recovered his former shape. He took vasiṣṭha to his palace. madayantī the wife of the King with his permission went to vasiṣṭha and got with child. vasiṣṭha returned to the forest. Even after the lapse of a long period she did not give birth to the child. madayantī who was miserable at this, took an ‘aśman’ (a small cylindrical piece of the granite used to crush things placed on a flat square piece of granite) and crushed her stomach with it and she delivered a son. As he was born by using ‘Aśma’ he was named aśmaka. This King had built a city called Paudhanyā. (M.B., Ādi Parva, Chapter 176).

Sanskritअश्मक अश्मेव स्थिरः निश्चलत्वात् इवार्थेकन् । १ ऋषिभेदे“वेदस्थानेन वात्स्येन तथाश्मकसुमन्तुना” भा० शा० प० ।२ दक्षिणदेशस्थे देशभेदे । “गन्तव्योमलयः श्रीमान् पर्व्वतोधातुमण्डित” इत्युपक्रम्य “तथाश्मका पुलिन्दाश्चकलिङ्गाश्च विशेषतः” रा० कि० का० । वृहत्संहितायान्तुस देशः पश्चिमोत्तरस्यां दिशि । “दिशि पश्चिमोत्तरस्यांमाण्डव्यतुषारतालहनमद्राः । अश्मककुलू नहडस्त्री-राज्यसिंहवनखण्डाः” इति कर्म्मविभागे उक्तम्” अत-उभतत्रापि तन्नामको देशः । तस्य जनपदवाचित्वात् तद्देशवासिषु तद्राजनि च ततः कृताणो बहुष लुक् । ३ तद्देशवासिनि ४ तद्राजनि च ब० व० । “साल्वावयवप्रत्यग्रथकनकूलाश्मकादिञ्” पा० सू० साल्वजनपदावयवत्वेनोक्तेः५ साल्वदेशावयवे च साल्वदेशश्च वृह० सं० कूर्म्मविभागे नव-सु खण्डेषु मध्यखण्डे उक्तः “भारतवर्षे मध्यात् प्रागादिविभाजिता देशाः भद्रारिमेदमाण्डव्यसाण्वनीपोज्ज्वि-हानसंख्याताः” इत्युपक्रम्य “गजाह्वयश्चेति मध्यमिदम्”इति नवखण्डे कूर्म्मभागे मध्यखण्डे तस्य स्थितिरुक्ताअतः साल्वावयवनामकोऽश्मकः तदीयदक्षिणप्रदेशस्थःइति गम्यते तेन रामायणवाक्यं तद्विषयकमिति न वि-रोधः । अश्मके साल्वावयवे भवः इञ् आश्मकिः । तद्दे-शभवे तद्राजनि च बहुषु लुक् आश्मकाः साल्वा-वयवावश्मकवासिषु तद्राजसु च ब० व० । स्त्रियां नलुक् आश्मक्यः । साल्वशब्देऽस्य विवृतिः ।
