अव्ययीभाव name of a compound so called on account of the words for- ming the compound, being similar to indeclinables: e. g. निर्मक्षिकम् , अधिहरि, यथामति, यावज्जीवम् etc.
cf. अन- व्ययं अव्ययं भवतीत्यव्ययीभावः M. Bh. on II.I.5. The peculiarity of the avyayībhāva compound is that the first member of the compound plays the role of the principal word
cf. पूर्वपदार्थप्रधानोऽव्ययीभावः M. Bh. on II.1.6.

 अनव्ययमव्ययं भवत्यनेन अव्यय + च्वि--भूकरणे घञ् । व्याकरणसिद्धे समासविशेषे । तत्र हि उप-कुम्भमित्यादौ अनव्ययस्यापि कुम्भादिपदस्याव्ययत्वम्“अव्ययीभावश्चेति” पा० सूत्रे तथामिधानात् । “द्वन्द्वो-द्विगुरपि चाहं नित्यं मद्दगृहेऽव्ययीभावः । तत्पुरुष! कर्म्मधारय येनाहं स्यां बहुव्रीहिः” उद्भटः ।
