अप्रयुक्त is one of the seventeen, accord. to the Sāhityad.,
one of the thirteen defects of a word (see पददोष), which
must be avoided in composition
e. g. in the sentence:
यथायं दारुणाचारः सर्वदैव विभाव्यते । तथा मन्ये दैवतोऽस्य
पिशाचो राक्षसोऽथ वा, or in the sentence: भाति पद्मः
सरोवरे, the masc. forms दैवतः and पद्मः are अप्रयुक्त
or as
the Kāvyapr. says, although the masc. of दैवत is gramma-
tically correct, no body uses the word in this gender:
अत्र दैवतशब्दो दैवतानि पुंसि वेति पुंस्याम्नातोऽपि न केन-
चित्प्रयुज्यते. E. अ neg. and प्रयुक्त.

In the instance तथा मन्ये दैवतोऽस्य पिशाचो राक्षसोऽथवा, the masc. form दैवतः is अप्रयुक्त, for although grammatically correct, it is not generally used, K.Pr.vii.
