^1 The name of the fifth part or Soma-
sansthā of the Jyotiṣṭoma sacrifice, for the complete per-
formance of which, however, it is not considered nitya, es-
sential or obligatory but kāmya, voluntary, viz. if the sacri-
ficer institutes it for the sake of progeny, and therefore anitya,
not always taking place, supererogatory. (See अग्निष्टोम.)
^2 The usual beginning and concluding part of those Ahargaṇa
sacrifices which are called Sattra (q. v.) and the beginning or
the concluding part of those which are called Ahīna (q. v.).
There are, however, exceptions to this rule, see f. i. पञ्चदश-
रात्र, कुण्डपायिनामयन.

Englishअतिरात्र / ATIRĀTRA. He was one of the ten children born to manu by naḍvalā. (See manu VAṀŚA). kuru, pūru, śatadyumna, tapasvī, satyavān, śuci, agniṣṭoma, atirātra, sudyumna and atimanyu were the names of the ten brilliant sons of naḍvalā. (viṣṇu purāṇa, Part I, Chapter 13).

Sanskritअतिरात्र अतिशयिता रात्रिः ततः अस्त्यर्थे अच् । एक-रात्रसाध्ये यागभेदे । स च गवामयने प्रथमसंस्थः यथोक्तंताण्ड्यब्राह्मणे । “प्रजापतिर्वा इदमग्र आसीत् सोऽकाम-यत बहु स्यां प्रजायेयेति सएतमतिरात्रमपश्यत्तमाहर-त्तेनाहोरात्रे प्राजनयदिति” गवाममयनसत्रमुपक्रम्य, “अथास्य सत्रस्य पूर्व्वोक्तान्यहानि क्रमेण विधास्यन् अति-रात्रसंस्थम् प्रथमं विधातुमाहेति” भाष्ये अवतरणिकां दत्त्वाव्याख्यातं यथा “स एवं कामयमानः प्रजापतिः सृष्ट्यु-पायत्वेन एतं गवामयनस्याद्यमतिरात्रमपश्यदिति” । तञ्चस्तुतिपूर्व्वकं विधित्सन्नाह । “यदेषोऽत्रिरात्रो स एवा-होरात्रे एव प्रजनयन्तीति” “एष प्रजापतिना दृष्टोऽति-रात्रः गवामयनस्य प्रथममहर्भवतीति यत् तेन सत्राननु-तिष्ठन्तो यजमाना अहोरात्रे एव प्रजनयन्ति उत्पादयन्तिस्वाधीने कुर्व्वन्तीति” भाष्यम् । इत्थमुपक्रम्य चतुर्थाध्याय-प्रथमखण्डपर्य्यन्ते तत्र विहितानि स्तोत्रशस्त्रादीन्युक्तानि ।“अतिरात्रे षोडशिनं गृह्णाति, नातिरात्रे षोडशिनंगृह्णातीति” श्रुत्यन्तरम् । षोडशी पात्रभेदः ।
