अंजना 1 N. of the female elephant of the north.
2 N. of the mother of Māruti or Hanūmat. [She was the daughter of a monkey named Kunjara and wife of Kesarin, another monkey. She was in a former birth a celestial nymph by name Puñjikasthalī and was born on earth owing to a curse. One day while she was seated on the summit of a mountain, her garment was slightly displaced, and the God of Wind being enamoured of her beauty assumed a visible form, and asked her to yield to his desires. She requested him not to violate her chastity, to which he consented
but he told her that she would conceive a son equal to himself in strength and lustre by virtue of his amorous desire fixed on her, and then disappeared. In course of time Anjanā conceived and brought forth a son who was called Māruti being the son of Māruta.]

"मारुति या हनुमान की माता का नाम। वह कुंजर नामक बानर की कन्या तथा केसरी की पत्नी थी, एक दिन वह एक पहाड़ की चोटी पर बैठी थी, कि उसका वस्त्र जरा शरीर से हट गया। वायुदेवता उसके सौन्दर्य पर मुग्ध हो गया, उसने दृश्य शरीर धारण कर अंजना से अपनी इच्छापूर्ति की याचना की। अंजना ने उससे प्रार्थना की कि आप मेरा सतीत्व नष्ट न करें। वायु ने इस बात को स्वीकार कर लिया, परन्तु कहा कि तुम्हारे शक्ति और कान्ति में मेरे जैसा पुत्र उत्पन्न होगा क्योंकि मैने तुम्हारी ओर कामवासना की दृष्टि से देखा है। यह कहकर वायु अन्तर्धान हो गया। यह पुत्र ही मारुति या हनुमान् था।"
