YAMA,
s.
(God of Naraka or Hell, Regent of the South, or
lower world, and judge of departed souls, corresponding
to the grecian god Pluto, or to the judge of hell,
Minos. His abode is in the infernal city of Yamapur,
whither the Hindūs believe that a departed soul imme-
diately repairs, and receiving a just sentence from Yama.
ascends to Swarga, the first heaven, or descends to Na-
raka, the snaky hell, or assumes on earth the form of
some animal, unless its offences have been such as
deserve condemnation to a vegetable or even to a
mineral prison. As god of justice and lord of punish-
ment, Yama corresponds with Śiva and Varuna, and in
this character is represented as bearing a cord or noose.
Yama is often identified with Death and Time. He is
the son of Surya or the Sun, and brother of the per-
