EnglishSHĀSTRA, SHĀSTER, A term applied to scientific or philo-
sophical treatises and books of law. There are properly
only six Ṣāstras, comprising the five philosophical sys-
tems (see SCHOOL), and the code of legal institutes
viz.
1. मीमांसाशास्त्रं or पूर्व्वमीमांसाशास्त्रं, 2. सांख्यशास्त्रं, 3. वेदान्तशास्त्रं,
4. न्यायशास्त्रं, including under it the वैशेषिकशास्त्रं, 5. योगशास्त्रं,
6. धर्म्मशास्त्रं. The last includes the celebrated code of
Manu or मानवधर्म्मशास्त्रं. The term Ṣāstra is also applied
to less important branches of literature, and when used in
the singular number denotes the body of all that has
been written on each subject
as, ‘Treatises on rhetoric, ’
अलङ्कारशास्त्रं
‘poetical works, ’ काव्यशास्त्रं
‘Treatises on
the mechanical arts, ’ शिल्पिशास्त्रं.
