The year is di-
vided into six seasons, according to the Hindūs, viz.
1. Spring, वसन्तः, वसन्तसमयः, comprising, according to the
reckoning which refers to the Northern parts of India,
the two months of चैत्रः and वैशाखः, i. e. from the middle
of March to the middle of May, see SPRING. 2. The hot
season or Summer, ग्रीष्मः, ग्रीष्मकालः, निदाघकालः, compris-
ing the two months of ज्येष्टः and आषाढः, i. e. from the
middle of May to the middle of July, see SUMMER. 3. The
rainy season, the rains, वर्षाः
m.
pl.
, वर्षाकालः, वृष्टिकालः, com-
prising the two months श्रावणः and भाद्रः, i. e. from the
middle of July to the middle of September, see under
RAIN, RAINY. 4. The autumnal season, शरद्, शरत्कालः,
शरदृतुः

, comprising the two months आश्विनः and कार्त्तिकः,
i. e. from the middle of September to the middle of No-
vember, see AUTUMN. 5. The cold season, हेमन्तः, comprising
the two months मार्गशीर्षः and पौषः, i. e. from the middle of
November to the middle of January. 6. The dewy season
or season of hoar frost, शिशिरः, शिशिरकालः, comprising the
two months माघः and फाल्गुनः, i. e. from the middle of
January to the middle of March. According to more
modern authorities the season of Spring begins with the
month Phālguna, or the middle of February. This
reckoning will place each of the succeeding seasons a
month earlier. Sometimes the word आगमः is used in
composition for ‘the coming on of a season, or for the
season itself, as ‘the rainy season, वर्षागमः, मेघागमः
‘the
hot season, ग्रीष्मागमः, उष्मागमः.
