धर्म्मग्रन्थः, धर्म्मपुस्तकं. The sacred writings of the Hindūs
may be arranged under seven heads, viz. 1. Vedas, 2. Upa-
nishads, 3. Vedāngas, 4. Upavedas, 5. Ṣāstras, 6. Purānas
and 7. Upapurānas. The Student is referred to each
separate head for a fuller explanation than is here given
of the subdivisions comprised under the several titles.
1. The Vedas are four in number, viz. ऋग्वेदः, यजुर्वेदः, सामवेदः,
अथर्ववेदः. 2. The Upanishads, are the theological and
philosophical chapters of the Vedas, either detached from,
or comprehended in, the principal work, and collectively
called वेदान्तः. 3. The Vedāngas are six sacred sciences
subordinate to the Vedas, viz. Pronunciation, शिक्षा, De-
scription of religious ceremonies, कल्पः, Grammar, व्याकरणं,
Prosody, छन्दस्, Astromony, ज्योतिषं, Explanation of difficult
and obscure phrases, निरुक्तं -क्तिः. 4. The Upavedas, or Mi-
nor vedas, are four, viz. Medicine, आयुर्वेदः, Archery and
military art, धनुर्वेदः, Music, गान्धर्ववेदः or गन्धर्ववेदः, Mechanics
and the use of tools, &c. , शिल्पिशास्त्रं or शस्त्रशास्त्रं. 5. Ṣāstra is
a title of very general application, but it is properly re-
stricted to six sacred and philosophical treatises, viz. मीमां-
साशास्त्रं, सांख्यशास्त्रं, वेदान्तशास्त्रं, न्यायशास्त्रं containing the
branch called वैशेषिकं, योगशास्त्रं and धर्म्मशास्त्रं. The last
contains the body of Hindū law

books of the six Hindū schools of philosophy, see SCHOOL.
6. The Purānas are eighteen mythological poems, see
PURĀNA. 7. The Upapurānas, or inferior Puranas, are
also eighteen, see under PURĀNA.
