-n  :  अनुवादकम् ।  अयं विधिः अन्यान् विधीन् अनुतिष्ठति । अयं सङ्कलकात् भिन्नः । सङ्कलकं स्वयं विधिं नानुतिष्ठति अपि तु विधिं यन्त्रभाषायां परिवर्तयति,  पश्चात् उपयोक्ता यन्त्रभाषायां वर्तमानं विधिम् अनुतिष्ठति । A program which executes other programs.  This is in contrast to a  compiler  which does not execute its input program (the " source code ") but translates it into executable " machine code " (also called " object code ") which is output to a file for later execution.
