HELL,
s.
 (Region under the earth, or residence of the Nāgas,
Asuras, Daityas, &c. , and not to be confounded with
Naraka or the place of punishment) पातालं, अधोभुवनं, नाग-
लोकः. There are seven of these Pātālas or lower regions,
सप्तपातालं. These are, 1. अतलं, 2. वितलं, 3. पातालं, 4. रसा-
तलं, 5. महातलं, 6. सुतलं, 7. तलातलं.

after death) नरकः, निरयः, नारकः. The Naraka, or Tar-
tarus of the Hindūs, is divided into numerous different
places of torture
such as, ‘the place paved with swords, ’

‘a place in which the wicked are baked like pots, ’
